Soccer Coach Suspended for Saying the Word She Was Telling Players Not to Say

A Kansas State women’s soccer coach told her players to stop playing music with a racial slur in it. Then she said the slur out loud while telling them not to say it. Then the university suspended her for two weeks. Then her assistant coach resigned in protest — not over the original music, but over the coach repeating the word while telling people not to use it.

If you need to read that paragraph twice, don’t worry. We did too.

Colleen Corbin, the head women’s soccer coach at K-State, was dealing with a legitimate issue. Before an exhibition match against Arkansas on March 7 in Kansas City, players were blasting pregame warm-up music that contained the N-word. Corbin told them to cut it out. Stop playing songs with that word. Reasonable enough, right?

Here’s where the plot goes off the rails.

While explaining her policy — the anti-slur policy, the “don’t use this word” policy — Corbin said the actual word. Out loud. To the players she was instructing not to say it. She reportedly said it again during a staff meeting with coaches, which is when assistant coach and goalkeepers coach Maddie Dobyns decided she’d had enough and resigned.

Dobyns didn’t resign because players were blasting music with slurs in it during warm-ups. She resigned because the coach said the slur while telling everyone to stop saying the slur.

We’ve now arrived at a place where the person trying to enforce the rule against a word gets punished more harshly than the people who were casually blasting the word through speakers in a public venue before a college sporting event.

The university’s statement is a masterpiece of bureaucratic confusion: “While addressing the issue, the coach inappropriately repeated the offensive lyrics. The incident was reported to the University’s Civil Rights and Title IX office, and K-State Athletics took action, issuing a suspension.”

Read that carefully. “While addressing the issue.” She was addressing the issue. She was doing the thing they want coaches to do — setting boundaries about language. And she got suspended for how she addressed it.

K-State Athletics added that they “take these matters seriously and expect coaches and players to respect others.” Apparently “these matters” include a coach using a word in the context of telling people not to use it.

Nobody — not a single person involved in this circus — has been disciplined for actually playing the music. The players who were blasting songs with the slur through speakers at a Division I athletic event before a game against another university? Nothing. The coach who tried to stop it? Two-week suspension.

This is the logical endpoint of a culture that treats words as radioactive material regardless of context. It doesn’t matter WHY you said it. It doesn’t matter that you were literally saying “don’t say this.” The word left your mouth, and now the university’s Civil Rights and Title IX office has been activated like a bureaucratic Bat-Signal.

The assistant coach resigned. The head coach is suspended. And somewhere in Kansas, a group of college soccer players is still trying to figure out whether they’re allowed to play their pregame playlist or whether the next coach who tells them to turn it off will also get suspended for explaining what they need to turn off.

Kafka couldn’t have written it better. Actually, Kafka would have given up halfway through and said “nobody would believe this.”
